PROJECT BRIEF:

The introduction of the rehabilitation project for the EL-Raml tarm line to Victoria in Alexandria marks a significant step towards improving the transportation infrastructure in the city. Recognizing the importance of a well-functioning public transportation system, the project aims to enhance the efficiency and accessibility of this particular line. By rehabilitating and upgrading the existing infrastructure, the project seeks to provide a reliable and comfortable commuting experience for the residents and visitors of Alexandria. With the implementation of modern technologies and improved facilities, the rehabilitation project is expected to contribute to the overall development and growth of the city, fostering economic opportunities and enhancing the quality of life for its inhabitants.

The rehabilitated route will be 14.5 km long and consist of 24 stations.

- 11 At Grade Stations

- 12 Elevated Stations

- 1 Station in open trench

The project objectives encompass the rehabilitation of the tram track, repositioning of stations, elimination of certain current stations to enhance operational effectiveness, and the elevation of specific segments. Stations will be reconstructed and revamped to cater to a larger number of passengers while also enhancing the efficiency of boarding and disembarking procedures.

The project comprises 24 passenger stations, with three of them serving as interchange points for other rail transportation:

  • Elevated Pedestrian Walkways: Victoria and Sidi Gaber stations connect with the Abou Qir Metro.
  • At-Grade Hub: Raml station provides an interchange with the City Tram.

 Tramline Design Philosophy:

The Philosophy was to reimagine this space into dynamic hub of the city preserving its historical essence while injecting modern life into its veins with taking into account persons with disabilities and providing their needs into tram stations with ascertain the  availability of the following requirement :

Constructible

The line will be shut for a limited amount of time and the expectation is that the works have to be sequenced to fit within that period. As a result, design and construction techniques have to be simplified and the use of modular prefabricated units would need to be maximized. The line will comprise both at‐grade and elevated sections, the latter to separate the tramway from critical road junctions.

Attractive and Affordable

The upgrade to the line and its transportation system needs to make the Raml tram attractive to the people of Alexandria and visitors alike. This will maximize revenue and pay for some of the enhancements. The cost of the upgrade and the enhancement also needs to be affordable to the authority and the funding agency without whom there would be no Project.

Reduce environmental pollution

The modernized tram will help to reduce noise and vibration in the city of Alexandria. It will also help, with efficient operations and maintenance regimes subsequently reducing the operating costs. Most importantly, the free‐flowing road intersections will help reduce air pollution.

Ultra-modern

Ultra modern design doesn’t have to be cold or hard ,it can be also incorporate all the elements of nature.

Integration

Whilst the tram serves a specific corridor within Alexandria it relies on other public or private transport modes to feed it. As a result, and for the creation of an efficient transport system in the city, the tram is to be integrated with public transport systems including buses, taxis and potential pedestrian routes.

Efficiency

The upgraded tram needs to be efficient in respect of availability, reliability and functionality. This will therefore dictate the type and shape of the infrastructure and the operating regime of the system. A new traffic light system will be implemented to give the tramway priority at road junctions at‐grade.

Pedestrian Friendly and Safe

Throughout the life of the upgraded tramway line, from inception to operation, safety of the passengers and road users has to be of paramount importance. Of particular relevance is the discharge of Tram passengers onto the busy roads of Alexandria. Pedestrian of specific areas may therefore need to be considered.

It is also about identifying each station since a strong sense of identity helps us navigate how we function while simultaneously opening us up to what we are and what we are not.

Stations identity follows a similar concept but at a greater depth.

This allows us to intimately embody a people’s way of living , portraying a society to its full length. Without distinct identities, we are left with a less distinguishable world.

This project stands as a testament to the high engineering standards maintained by PCG Consulting Group. Through rigorous structural analysis and architectural foresight, we have delivered a landmark that serves both national and regional goals.

Technical Integrity

All structural frameworks and mechanical systems within the ALEXANDRIA TRAM STATIONS are built to international safety codes and efficiency protocols. Detailed site analysis and environmental impact simulations guided every phase of engineering.
